As the leading cause of death for Americans under the age of 45, traumatic brain injury (TBI) can be devastating not only to those who experience it directly, but also to family members of the victims.  While the most common cause of TBI is an automobile collision, they can occur from sports related injuries, assault, and workplace-related incidents.  TBI can deprive victims of simple pleasures in life, income, and even their life.

Symptoms of traumatic brain injury can be subtle and include:

  • Personality changes
  • Depression
  • Loss of vision
  • Memory loss
  • Nausea
  • Persistent headaches
  • Cognitive impairment and confusion

Children aren’t immune to TBI, either, and their symptoms can be very tragic, depriving them of their joy and key developmental milestones, such as:

  • Difficultly walking
  • Vomiting
  • Loss of motor skills
  • Disinterest in their toys and games
  • Struggling in school

There is no such thing as a “mild” brain injury; all brain injuries can have long-lasting repercussions and should be treated like a serious injury.  That said, there are three major classifications of TBI, which include:

  • Mild TBI: The victim may or may not lose consciousness, and brain scans will appear normal. The victim may seem dazed or confused.
  • Moderate TBI: The victim loses consciousness for anywhere between a few seconds to a few hours. They will have lasting impairments that range from a few weeks to the rest of their lives.
  • Severe Brain Injury: These are life threatening and result from crushing or piercing blows to the head. These permanently change the victim and can lead to epilepsy and Alzheimer’s.

Recovery from TBI can be costly, not only financially but emotionally.  Sufferers may require around-the-clock care from medical professionals who will re-teach basic life skills such as speech, walking, and even how to feed and bathe themselves again.
